Later bemo presence is intended to replace the pedicab. But this plan did not succeed because of the presence of bemo not supported by a mature plan. Bemo is not only present in Jakarta, but also in other cities such as Bogor, Bandung, Surabaya, Malang, Padang, Denpasar, etc.. because these vehicles are very practical and capable of reaching the narrow streets, and can go much faster than tricycles.
Bemo is beginning to operate like a taxi, later restricted areas of operations in certain routes, and finally removed to thin routes that had been left untouched by city bus. In Jakarta, began bemo removed in 1971, followed by Surabaya and Malang in the same year. In 1979, the Regional Government of Surakarta take similar steps.
Collided knee
In their home country, Japan, said bemo not intended to be used as a transportation man, but as the transportation of goods. As a result, when paired seating, space available was actually very narrow. Moreover bemo usually used to transport at least eight passengers, six in the rear, two in front, including the driver. Therefore, passengers in the back of the knee often have to compete, sitting overcrowding. But consequently, bemo ride can cause its own memories, especially for those who met her match in bemo
Waiting for a death knell?
When the factory in Japan, home of bemo, no longer produce spare parts, bemo in Indonesia is still able to survive because there are many workshops that can make copies of parts.
Currently bemo has eliminated much of the public transportation program because they are too old, unsafe and polluting smoke. But in many places bemo still able to survive and difficult abolished.
